A-League: Champions City throw two-goal lead away to draw, Sydney lose at home

A-League champions Melbourne City threw a two-goal lead away to draw 2-2 away at Adelaide United in their second game of the season.

City kicked their title defence off with a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in their opening match and looked set to make it two wins from two after goals from Jamie Maclaren and Andrew Nabbout gave them a 2-0 advantage after 61 minutes.

However, Adelaide struck twice in the closing stages, with Stefan Mauk halving the deficit before Ben Halloran grabbed a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser to stun City.

Union Berlin 1-1 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski leveller rescues champions

Robert Lewandowski s strike sent Bayern Munich back to the top of the Bundesliga but the European champions had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Union Berlin.

Grischa Promel s early header put Union in front at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei on Saturday, but they were unable to consign Bayern to what would have been a first defeat in 17 matches.

Lewandowski s 16th goal in as many games this season brought Hansi Flick s side level and neither team could force a winner in a pulsating contest.

The defending champions have now drawn three of their past four Bundesliga games but sit at the summit above RB Leipzig on goal difference.

Just a point

Japan 2 England 1: Late own goal breaks English hearts

An own goal in second-half stoppage time from Laura Bassett broke English hearts as reigning champions Japan advanced to the Women s World Cup final.

Having had the better of the chances in the second half, England could not reach their maiden World Cup final, as Bassett s desperate attempt to intercept a cross from the right saw her lob her own goalkeeper and put the ball in off the crossbar handing Japan a 2-1 victory.

England s players were distraught after the final whistle, with coach Mark Sampson seen consoling Bassett.

For Japan, the win means they will meet United States in the final on Sunday in a replay of the 2011 decider, which the Japanese won on penalties.

Japan started the match in a more spritely fashion but needed a somewhat dubious penal…

Ribery delighted to break goal drought

Franck Ribery revealed that his France team-mates had teased him about his three-year goal drought before Sunday s friendly win over Iceland.

The Bayern Munich winger had not scored since the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at the Saint Denis on April 1, 2009, but he chipped home after a lovely one-two with Olivier Giroud to level the game in Valenciennes, before Adil Rami won the match 3-2 for Les Bleus.

After long being accused of failing to reproduce his club form at international level, Ribery was relieved to have finally found the back of the net for his country.

This goal is good for me, he said.

Before going on the field, Karim (Benzema), Samir (Nasri) and Hatem (Ben Arfa), they teased me.

So, I am very satisfied for myself …

Lloris seeking positive response to Champions League stumble

Hugo Lloris has called on Tottenham to respond with positivity after their Champions League defeat to Monaco in midweek.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 at Wembley on Wednesday, marking their first loss of the season after going unbeaten through the first four games of the new Premier League campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino s men take on Sunderland on Sunday, and goalkeeper and captain Lloris has stressed the importance of bouncing back from the Group E reverse against Monaco immediately.

We used to say that a big team doesn t lose twice in a row and we are a big team. That is important and it is important to bounce back, Lloris said.

We know we have great potential. It is a good opportunity to play Champions League and show in Europe Tottenham are growing up and…

Milan snap up Kucka

Milan have announced the signing of midfielder Juraj Kucka from Genoa.

The Slovakia international arrives at San Siro on a four-year contract, with the club yet to reveal details of a fee.

Having started his career in his homeland, Kucka secured a move from Sparta Prague to Genoa in 2011.

His early performances in Serie A brought him to the attention of the competition s bigger clubs, with reports in 2013 linking him with a move to Milan.

Two years later, that transfer has come to fruition, and Kucka joins Carlos Bacca, Luiz Adriano, Andrea Bertolacci, Alessio Romagnoli and Mario Balotelli as one of a host of new arrivals under coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Kucka scored two goals in 34 league appearances for Genoa last term.

Hazard: Champions League games hindering Chelsea

Eden Hazard believes Chelsea s problems this season are partly due to the team s participation in the Champions League.

Antonio Conte led the Blues to the Premier League title in his first season in English football, Chelsea having failed to qualify for Europe after finishing 10th in the 2015-16 campaign.

But with European commitments adding to their domestic duties, Chelsea have struggled to maintain their form from last season, sitting fourth in the Premier League after successive defeats against Bournemouth and Watford.

Chelsea were also beaten by Arsenal in the semi-final of the EFL Cup last month, with Hazard citing extra games as a reason for Conte s side finding life harder this term.

I think the Premier League is difficult, he told ESPN FC. It s …

Debuchy ends fruitless Arsenal stint to join Saint-Etienne

Mathieu Debuchy has joined Saint-Etienne until the end of the season after his contract was terminated by Arsenal.

The right-back joined the Gunners in 2014 but injuries were a contributing factor to him making only 13 Premier League appearances for the club.

The 32-year-old, who began his career and came to prominence at Lille, spent the second half of the 2015-16 season on loan at Bordeaux.

Debuchy made four appearances in the Europa League for Arsenal this season but did not feature in the Premier League.

He joins Yann M Vila, Paul-Georges Ntep and Neven Subotic among the arrivals of a productive transfer window at Saint-Etienne.

RB Leipzig 2-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Forsberg penalty settles key Group H clash

RB Leipzig gained a measure of revenge for their 2019-20 Champions League semi-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain, coming from behind to claim a potentially crucial 2-1 win in Group H.

PSG, despite being without both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar through injury, started brightly at Red Bull Arena and took an early lead through Angel Di Maria.

However, the game turned on a tale of two penalties, with Di Maria failing to make it 2-0 from 12 yards before former PSG midfielder Christopher Nkunku levelled in the 41st minute.

Leipzig were then given a chance to complete the turnaround from the penalty spot and it was one Emil Forsberg did not waste, sealing a victory that moves them level on points with group leaders Manchester United and three points clear of PSG, who finis…

Prediction: Brazil vs Honduras

Best Odds:

Bookmaker:

Putting together their final preparations before their Copa America campaign gets underway, Brazil will host Honduras on Sunday night.

Brazil

Starting with the hosts, while Brazil may have been disappointed to have only managed a quarter-final finish out in Russia last summer, the Yellows have refound their momentum before the Copa America gets underway next week. Despite Thursday s 2-0 win over Qatar being overshadowed by captain and talisman Neymar limping off injured and being ruled out of their upcoming qualifiers, Tite s men once again impressed and are unbeaten in their nine post-World Cup appearances, winning eight of those contests. Continuing to shine in the final third with a sq…
